Norris explains whether the McLaren upgrade is working in Miami

5 May - 15:20

Last time out, Lando Norris secured a fantastic second place in Sunday's race at the Chinese Grand Prix, beating the Red Bull of Sergio Perez. Now, at the Miami Grand Prix, McLaren have brought a brand new package to his papaya-coloured McLaren, but that has only brought mixed results for the Brit.

Norris says the package is 'working as expected'

Norris' weekend started poorly with a 9th in sprint qualifying, a complete contrast to the pole position he took in Shanghai two weeks ago. It then went from bad to worse in the sprint race (although it wasn't totally his fault), as the 24-year-old was forced to retire on the first lap of the race after he and Lance Stroll made contact. However, he improved his results with a P5 in qualifying for Sunday's race.

Speaking in the paddock after that result in qualifying, Norris said that the updates brought onto his car have been "good" and that they are "working as expected" on his McLaren. "Andrea is probably going to be able to comment on it more than I am, to be honest with you. But I think both packages are working as expected. So, it's good. It's helped us out, it's helped us move forward, but I think it's not the track which is going to show all of it."

The Brit believes that the package can be shown off more at the next race in Imola, saying that the Miami International Autodrome track does not show off the new updates in the best light. "I think, hopefully, in Imola or something, we can see a bit more of the potential of the car," continued Norris.

"But step in the right direction. The team have done a very good job of getting everything here and ready. So, I say thanks to them for that. But as a driver, it's not changed the characteristic of anything. You just drive to the same limit. You get to find when the oversteer starts to happen and you kind of stay there. So, it's nothing to say, yeah, it feels way better. Because you're gaining KPH. Or you can get your throttle in about a metre earlier."
