In sport, there are always the lists: this person has that record, he was the best in it. In Formula 1, too, the lists usually fly around your ears. But not everything can be measured. The list of which F1 driver is the best of all time is one that always provokes much debate. The Daily Mail is the latest to ventures into this debate. The best of all time according to the medium? Juan Manuel Fangio. The number two? Perhaps surprisingly...

It is not Michael Schumacher, Ayrton Senna or perhaps even Max Verstappen who is the second-best F1 driver of all time. According to the Daily Mail, Lewis Hamilton deserves that honour: "That he never made a professional foul is greatly to his credit. Hamilton is a trailblazer and statistically the greatest of them all. A crowning title at Ferrari would make him so. If Verstappen doesn’t press his own claims remorselessly," the newspaper writes.

'Verstappen could become the best ever'

According to the Daily Mail, Ayrton Senna is number three on the list, one spot above Michael Schumacher. Reigning world champion Max Verstappen is rated by the medium as the fifth-best F1 driver in history. "When his career is over his name may lead all the rest," is the laudatory caption under Verstappen's name.

Stirling Moss (6), Alain Prost (7), Jackie Stewart (8), Jim Clark (9) and Fernando Alonso complete the top ten in the British newspaper's list. Sebastian Vettel, winner of 53 Grands Prix and four world titles, is thus missing from the top ten. The German finds himself in fourteenth position.
