Which nations have won a Formula 1 Grand Prix?

9 May - 18:00

Since 1950, drivers from 23 countries have won a Grand Prix in Fomula One's long history from every continent in the world, except for Asia. From the United Kingdom and the Netherlands to South Africa and Venezuela, GPblog lists you the nations that finished in P1 at least once in the competition.

The United Kingdom lead the list with 309 victories, largely thanks to seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, who won 103 times so far. Hamilton himself would all by himself finish third in this ranking. The Britons were also able to extend their lead over Germany at the Miami Grand Prix, after Lando Norris crossed the finish line in first place. Germany currently trail the UK by 130 victories in P2. 166 of the 179 German victories were achieved by their world champions, Michael Schumacher, Sebastian Vettel and Nico Rosberg, but their only current driver in the sport, Nico Hulkenberg, is yet to step on the podium.

Brazil are the best South American country ahead of Argentina, just exceeding a hundred victories in the competition, thanks to legends like Ayrton Senna or Emerson Fittipaldi. They are in third place with 101 Grands Prix wins, 20 ahead of fourth place France. However, the last time a Brazilian competed in a Formula One race was back in 2020 when Pietro Fittipaldi was substituted in for Romain Grosjean.

The Netherlands round off the top five, or namely just Max Verstappen, as he is the only one won to get this achievement completed. The longest wait for a first GP victory out of the countries on the list also belong to the Dutch, as they had to watch 286 races until Max Verstappen won the 2016 Spanish Grand Prix. If the Netherlands continue at this rate thanks to the defending world champion, they would still have to wait until 2025 to overtake France in P4.

From P6 down to P14 and New Zealand, every country also has a world champion. As of now, only two nations' drivers are competing in frontrunner car, with Oscar Piastri driving for McLaren, Carlos Sainz competing for Ferrari and two-time world champion Fernando Alonso trying to secure "la 33" for himself.

The United States are a bit of an outlier in P12, as one third of their 33 victories come from when the Indy 500 was part of the Formula One calendar from 1950 until 1960.

The only African country on the list is South Africa. 1979 world champion Jody Scheckter won the 10 Grands Prix for the African nation from 1974 until 1979. They are currently chased by Mexico with Sergio Perez and Monaco with Charles Leclerc, both hoping to add more victories in 2024. Monaco were also the most recently added country to this list in 2019.

Poland and Venezuela are the only countries with a single victory on the list. Well-liked driver Robert Kubica won the 2008 Canadian Grand Prix a year after his massive crash in Montreal, and Pastor Maldonado famously won the 2012 Spanish Grand Prix ahead of Fernando Alonso. Venezuela's only win, pole position and podium all come from that weekend in Barcelona.

No Asian country have won a race in Formula 1 history, which seems especially harsh for Japan. Some consider the Eastern Asian country a powerhouse because of their tracks, engines and passion for the sport. Japenese drivers finished third three times thanks to Aguri Suzuki, Takuma Sato and Kamui Kobayashi. There are currently three Asian nations represented thanks to Yuki Tsunoda (Japan), Guanyu Zhou (China) and Alexander Albon (Thailand) on the grid, hoping to one day make history for the continent.
