Liberty Media bins plans for a Q4 session in 2020
Four qualifying sessions on the Saturday was an interesting idea on paper. It was proposed that the Q4 session would feature just the top eight drivers fighting for the front four rows on used tyres. But the plan has now been put in the bin.
The German Auto Motor und Sport knows the plan for the extra session in qualifying has been scrapped. This is the second time the idea has been dismissed. The first time was because they couldn't finalise the details, and this time it's because of the viewers.
Under the saying 'if it ain't broke don't fix it' Liberty have scrapped the plans after the ratings of qualifying increased by 50%. The only reason Liberty Media was thinking about a Q4 at all was to provide more sensation on the other days of the race weekend.
The way the weekend works has been under question for many years. Fans, drivers and team members suggest they should remove a practice session or two.
