Ferrari are heading for third place in the Constructors' Championship this season. Although it is a relief for the Italian team, Mattia Binotto emphasises that Ferrari's main concern is next season.
Whereas Carlos Sainz struggled to maintain a consistent level at the start of the season, Charles Leclerc got off to a flying start. Over the course of the season the Spaniard then caught up with his teammate, meaning the two drivers are almost evenly matched in the world championship standings. Moreover, Ferrari won the battle with McLaren and therefore occupy third place in the Constructors' Championship.
Binotto looks forward to next season
With two races to go, Binotto hopes the season will come to an end as soon as possible. "It's almost unbearable," he told Corriere dello Sport. "What we wanted to learn this year, we have learned. We've been working full steam ahead on the 2022 car for a long time. I can't wait for this season to be over."
"We made some improvements to the car at the beginning of the year, but that was it in terms of development. And the optimization of the engine that we did at the end of the summer was also aimed at 2022. We considered this a transition year from the beginning. We're focusing almost exclusively on 2022 and we also did not do anything that would have helped us in 2021 but would have jeopardized the work for 2022."
