Max Verstappen is the 2021 F1 World Champion with ten wins. One of those victories was the victory in Zandvoort in front of his home crowd. Verstappen and Red Bull Racing team boss Christian Horner look back on the weekend in the Dutch dunes together.
Verstappen recorded a rock-solid victory at Zandvoort and drove across the line first with fireworks. A big party erupted in the seaside resort. The win at the first Dutch Grand Prix was one of the iconic moments in Verstappen's racing career and belongs in the ranks of his first win in Spain in 2016 and the rain race in Brazil in the same year, among others.
Dutch GP looked like a nightclub
The Dutchman still can't believe what happened that weekend. Speaking to Speedweek.com Verstappen says that all the fans wanted to see him win, but that the fight with Mercedes was particularly tough. "It was unbelievable." Horner sits in on the conversation and recalls, "It felt like we were in a nightclub for three days."
The Dutch Grand Prix was such a big party that Horner couldn't make himself heard on the grid that weekend. The hundred thousand beer drinking Verstappen fans were too loud. Horner seems impressed with the way Verstappen handled the pressure and says to the 2021 champion: "I looked into your eyes and thought to myself, you're in your own world. I thought, 'How can he hide it all'."
