Haas' sixth season in Formula 1 was one to forget quickly. With zero points and the tenth and final spot in the championship, 2021 was the worst season ever for the team that finished fifth in the championship in 2018. The American team hopes to turn the tide in 2022.

Tough and challenging year for Haas

Haas never made a secret of the fact that 2021 was a transition year and that the focus was on the new cars in 2022. Young drivers Mick Schumacher and Nikita Mazepin were also allowed to gain experience this season, to reap the rewards in 2022.

Team boss Guenther Steinder looked back in an interview with Racer on a challenging and very tough year. "We knew this was coming, but there is light at the end of the tunnel," the 56-year old said. He is confident that Haas can make another big step forward next year.

Less pressure for Schumacher and Mazepin

With Haas deciding to make the year a transition period before the season started, there was also less pressure to perform for the team's two rookies. Schumacher and Mazepin were able to gain experience without too much pressure, and mistakes were quickly accepted.

Steiner agrees that this was an advantage for the drivers, but for next season the expectations are much higher. According to the team boss the team was in a difficult period, but always tried to get the best out of it. "Hopefully it will pay off to keep us focused," he remained optimistic about the new season.
