Zak O'Sullivan has won the BRDC Young Driver of the Year award after four contenders competed in a two-day shootout at Silverstone. The British driver, also confirmed as a Williams junior last week, also receives an Aston Martin Formula One test through the award.
O'Sullivan was already happy with nomination
The driver, who turned 17 on Sunday, won the GB3 championship last season and will drive Formula 3 with Carlin next season. The Briton, of Irish descent, was one of four contenders for the BRDC Young Driver of the Year award. Along with Jonny Edgar, Louis Foster and Ollie Bearman, he spent two days at Silverstone in October driving cars from different racing classes and doing simulator work under the guidance of the Mercedes Formula One team.
O'Sullivan has now been named the best of the four drivers, joining the ranks of David Coulthard, George Russell, Lando Norris and Jenson Button, among others to have won the award. "I was incredibly happy with the nomination and really enjoyed the evaluation experience in October, so to go home with the award is icing on the cake," he told MotorsportWeek.com.
Test with Aston Martin for O'Sullivan
In addition to a cash prize of £200,000, O'Sullivan will receive a test with the Aston Martin Formula One team later this year. O'Sullivan is very much looking forward to the test and especially hopes that his neck will hold up. "It will be great to be able to say that I have driven an F1 car," he said.
