The FIA decided on Friday afternoon to cancel the Russian Grand Prix. The reason for this is the Russian invasion of Ukraine that took place on Thursday. Promoter Rosgonki, however, has no intention of giving up for the time being, he reveals in conversation with The Race.
The Formula 1 race in Russia has taken place for the last eight years, with Mercedes coming out on top each time. The Russian GP was also scheduled to take place this season, but due to the war between Russia and Ukraine, the FIA suddenly had to deal with outside pressure. Moreover, the drivers began to stir themselves.
After internal consultations, the FIA thought it best to abandon a Russian GP in 2022. It means that the organization has to search for a new location to hold a race in mid-September, although the FIA has become accustomed to this in recent years due to the cancellations because of the coronavirus.
Rosgonki hopes for GP Russiaafter all
However, Rosgonki believes that the event can still go ahead and therefore does not want to call it off definitively yet."Purchased tickets are not being annulled," he let us know. "There is no need to return them right now as the possibility still remains that the race will take place as previously scheduled."
