Lewis Hamilton was the big favourite for the world title in 2016, but he failed to beat teammate Nico Rosberg. It caused a lot of disagreement within the team that Toto Wolff managed to resolve. In doing so, he used a special method, he told The Times.
The British driver was a three-time world champion in 2016 and was keen to take his fourth. However, he did not manage to beat Rosberg, who had an excellent season and managed to win the world championship at the end of the racing year.
Wolff entered into a dialogue with Hamilton
The season caused a lot of anger with Hamilton who was hesitating about continuing at Mercedes. Wolff became aware of these doubts and decided to invite Hamilton to his home at the end of 2016 to talk about the situation. In doing so, he drew a clear comparison.
As Wolff reveals, "I said to him, and Susie didn’t much like this analogy, that even though Susie and I might disagree about something, it would never come into my mind to divorce. ‘And it’s the same with you Lewis,’ I said. ‘I don’t want a divorce. You’re the best driver. I want you in our car and we want to provide you with the best car.’"
