Fernando Alonso was "positively surprised" by Alpine after the team's performance in Bahrain was much better than in Barcelona. He ended the test days with the fourth time but is not yet sure if Alpine can move further forward this year.

In conversation with The Race the Spaniard gives reason to be optimistic, because the team is putting a lot of energy into the program. He therefore hopes that Alpine can take a shot at the world title in the future, but how far in the future that will be is also impossible for Alonso to predict.

Alonso is confident about Alpine's future

So when asked if Alpine can already be more than a midfield team by 2022, he has no answer. "We have to wait and see how the first races develop and see what we need from the car," he says.

"We will see at the first race," continues Alonso, who stresses that even the first race does not say everything about the upcoming season. "Last year we got zero points in Bahrain but won a race in Hungary."
