Well after 02:00 local time the Formula 1 drivers came to a decision on whether or not to race in Saudi Arabia. Following the teams, they too have decided to trust the organisation when it comes to safety on and around the Jeddah Corniche Circuit.

Drivers agree after lengthy deliberation

At 03:00 local time a press conference will be held by the organisers. The decision will be announced, but it has been leaked by enough people to be sure: the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix will take place.

As we await the press conference, several people have already spoken out. Red Bull Racing team boss Christian Horner was the first to make a statement: "We'll be racing," he said after everyone involved had been briefed. Fernando Alonso also gave a hint: "See you tomorrow," he said as he left the circuit.

The decision to let the race go ahead causes a lot of incomprehension. At the same time it is the organisers who made the initial decision. They put the pressure on the shoulders of the drivers, who presented a bigger obstacle than the F1 chiefs had expected.

Even though the drivers ultimately decided to support the passage of the race, they have sent a clear message. They have a voice and are more than 'the puppets' driving the cars. The unanimous decision of the FIA and Formula 1 proved, after four hours of consultation by the drivers, to be anything but unanimous.
