Perez suddenly the favourite for victory: 'Keep nerves in check'
- GPblog.com
For the first time in 2022, Red Bull Racing is on pole position for a Grand Prix. In Bahrain, Charles Leclerc was faster than Max Verstappen and Carlos Sainz, and in Saudi Arabia he looked set to repeat the feat. However, Sergio Perez managed to improve his time by 0.025, which means the Mexican will start from first place for the first time in his long F1 career.
That fast lap of Verstappen's teammate many did not see coming, but because of it Perez suddenly has the best papers to take his third victory in Formula 1. This is also noted by Ralf Schumacher at the German branch of Sky Sports. "He has the best chances now if he keeps his nerves."
Ferraris will attack Perez
The Red Bull driver is known as a very strong driver in the race, but also as someone who often lacks speed in qualifying. That he would be so fast at one of the most difficult circuits on the F1 calendar was therefore a big surprise. According to Schumacher, it is important that the Mexican manages to keep both Ferrari's behind him after the start. Then it will not be easy for Leclerc and Sainz to chase Perez on the fast circuit.
"Once the Ferraris are behind them, it will be difficult." According to the former F1 driver, the start will therefore be crucial. On top of that, Max Verstappen will be looking to move up from P4. For this he will first have to pass the Ferrari-duo, which will be anything but an easy task.
