In 2021, Ferrari and McLaren were fighting for the title of "best of the rest. In the end, Ferrari finished third in the championship, but all indications were that the battle would continue in 2022 with the new regulations. However, the contrast is now stark, because where Ferrari is fighting for victories, McLaren has to fight and hope for points.
In Saudi Arabia, Lando Norris managed to secure the first points of this season with a seventh place, while Daniel Ricciardo also seemed to be on his way to points in the same race, until his McLaren car quit. As a result, the Australian's points tally this season still stands at zero points.
Ricciardo trusts his team
Still, he holds out hope and trusts his team can still save this season. Speaking to The Race Ricciardo even hinted that he wouldn't be surprised if McLaren's orange car can still win races this season. "If it comes, it will come a bit later than certainly desired. But without getting ahead of ourselves, if we were to come and win a race at some point this year, I wouldn’t actually be surprised."
According to Ricciardo, the most important thing is that the team from Woking is able to solve the problems they are currently facing. "It wouldn't be a surprise to me because I still believe in the team and the process we have in place and the people we have in place to get the job done," Ricciardo concluded.
