'Mercedes takes major upgrade to Australia'
- GPblog.com
According to Mark Hughes and Giorgio Piola, Mercedes is coming to Australia with a brand new rear wing. This would resemble the wing the team used in Jeddah, but has an even smaller mainplane.
It was not the season start Mercedes had hoped for. The team that managed to win the last eight constructors' titles has fallen significantly behind Ferrari and Red Bull Racing over the winter. For Mercedes, it is therefore of great importance that the team comes up with major upgrades for the W13 as soon as possible.
First major upgrade from Mercedes
That first upgrade is expected in Melbourne. The rear wing is said to have undergone a metamorphosis making it a lot smaller. This is what Hughes and Piola say on F1.com. Mercedes reportedly wanted to use this wing already in Saudi Arabia, but it was not finished in time.
The mainplane of the Mercedes will be a lot smaller compared to the first two races. This means that the car will generate a lot less downforce at the rear. The change is somewhat remarkable, as the Albert Park circuit in Melbourne requires a lot more downforce than the Jeddah Corniche Circuit.
