Driver standings | Verstappen and Perez catch up with Sainz and Russell
- GPblog.com
Max Verstappen was able to add eight points after the sprint race for the Grand Prix of Imola. The Dutchman took the victory, but with that he is still not really catching up with Charles Leclerc in the driver's championship.
His eleventh place in the sprint race leaves George Russell stuck with 37 points, allowing Sergio Perez and Verstappen to catch up with him. The Dutchman also comes closer to Perez's point total after his first place in the sprint race. The difference between the teammates is now only three points.
Verstappen wins little
Verstappen is not yet catching up much with Leclerc, however, as the Red Bull driver gained just one more point over his rival in the sprint race. Carlos Sainz, meanwhile, has overtaken Russell for second place, but the drivers between P2 and P6 are close together. After the race, many shifts can again be expected.
Lewis Hamilton also failed to gain any points and remains stuck at 28 points. In the midfield, there are no drivers who make a big jump, because there are only a few points to earn for the top eight in the sprint race. McLaren did manage to get double points with a P5 and P6 finish. Lando Norris is now only eight points away from the P6 of Hamilton.
