Carlos Sainz once again failed to score points in a Grand Prix, but this time the Ferrari driver could do little about it. The Spaniard was nudged by Daniel Ricciardo at the Imola circuit on the opening lap which immediately ended his race. Ricciardo has since apologized to Sainz.
At the lights out, the asphalt was still very damp and so the start was made on intermediate tyres. The conditions were tricky and in the process Ricciardo ended up hitting Sainz.
"I felt like I was pushed into him, but that was actually the second stage of this incident. That was because I went over the kerb, slid down and then collided with him [Sainz]," Ricciardo is culpable in conversation with the German Motorsport Magazin, among others. After the race, the McLaren driver stopped by Ferrari's motorhome: "I apologized, of course."
Whereas Sainz crashed out immediately, Ricciardo was still able to continue his way. Lando Norris was third, but for the driver from Perth finished in eighteenth place. He crossed the finish line last, as Fernando Aloso and thus Sainz had to abandon the fight prematurely. According to team boss Andreas Seidl, Ricciardo's diffuser was too badly damaged by contact with the Alfa Romeo of Valtteri Bottas in the incident on the first lap of the race.
