There was great consternation at Mercedes last weekend when Lewis Hamilton failed to finish in the points. However, Toto Wolff protected the Brit soon after the race by stating that the problems lie with Mercedes. He does so at F1insider.com again.

Hamilton fought for victories with Mercedes for years, but this season he has to take a big step back. The seven-time world champion, partly due to the problems with porpoising, has a car with which he cannot compete with Red Bull Racing and Ferrari.

Wolff takes responsibility for performance

However, in Italy, unlike George Russell, he also failed to finish in the points. To top it off, Max Verstappen even lapped him, which made the race extra painful. For Wolff, however, there is no doubt that the driver will perform better again if he has a good car. In doing so, he takes responsibility himself.

"If we don't perform, I have to take the disappointment at the end of the day. That's part of the job," stressed Wolff, who previously stated that Hamilton could do nothing about the current problems. "I have to protect him a little bit, because it's not his low point, but the car's."
