'Ferrari delays engine update, wants to get reliability right first'
- GPblog.com
Since this season there is an engine freeze in Formula 1, from the beginning of September updates can still be rolled out for the electrical part of the power source. Ferrari would initially have planned to do the same, but reliability problems may throw a spanner in the works.
So reports the usually well-informed Formu1a.uno. The ERS update that was scheduled has been postponed. In this way space is created to first solve the current problems with the engine.
Whether there will eventually be enough time left to introduce the ERS update will depend on how much time and energy needs to be put into making the power sources currently being driven 100 percent reliable again. Currently in Maranello the reason why Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc crashed out in the Azerbaijani Grand Prix is being investigated.
Will Ferrari do the same as Mercedes in 2021?
The Italian medium further writes that Ferrari had already decided at the beginning of the season to adopt more aggressive strategy. The plan was always to take a grid penalty and use four engines. Due to reliability issues, it could also be that Leclerc and/or Sainz will use five power sources this year. If so, it would become more like what Mercedes did at the end of last year: take grid penalties and push the engine further to get the maximum potential out of the power units.
