Hamilton reacts to podium place: "I gave it everything"
For a while it looked like Lewis Hamilton had a good chance of winning the British Grand Prix, but in the end, he had to settle for a podium place. Hamilton secures a consecutive podium finish after finishing in the same place two weeks ago in Canada as Mercedes start to find improvements. The team have struggled with porpoising since winter testing and issued a series of upgrades this weekend.
Mercedes mistakes
On a different day, perhaps Mercedes and Hamilton could've capitalised on the Ferrari blunders up ahead. A slow pitstop cost Hamilton an important 1.5 seconds, and Hamilton was left wondering if his team opted for the right tyres when they pitted under the safety car. But in the end, the seven-time World Champion was pleased with third place.
"I gave it everything, tried to chase the Ferrari but they were too quick. I was in the battle with Checo, they were too quick for me on the staights. Thanks to the team for the hard work with the updates, we've made a step closer to them. We lost time in the pit stop, and then I was chasing. The pace was great on both sets, once you have a Red Bull behind they are so fast on the straights," Hamilton told his former teammate Jenson Button in the post-race interview.
The British crowd came in record numbers this weekend. Hamilton wanted to send his thanks to the crowd, and also to the team for finding the gains.
"I have to give it up to the crowd. Thank you to everyone for the incredible support, we don't see this around the world. I am glad everyone was safe from the big crash. We will continue to push, let's try and be the best we can," Hamilton added.
