BREAKING | Piastri succeeds Alonso at Alpine in 2023
- GPblog.com
It was bound to happen since the announcement that Fernando Alonso would be moving to Aston Martin next year, but now it has been officially confirmed: Oscar Piastri is coming to Alpine and finally getting the chance to prove himself as a Formula One driver.
Piastri succeeds Alonso at Alpine
The signing of Piastri cannot be called a surprise. It has been clear for some time that Alpine has high expectations of the Australian. Piastri became champion last season on his debut in Formula 2, but a seat in 2022 proved impossible. This year he is Alpine's test and reserve driver, but next year it will be his debut.
It is unclear for how many years Piastri has signed. Alpine only says in a statement that the line-up for 2023 is complete. It seems illogical that the French team has signed a contract for just one year, because after a good season in the premier class of motorsport Piastri would be free to do as he pleases.
It is also remarkable that Alpine's press release does not contain a single quote from Piastri. That usually never happens. What the reason for that is, is not (yet) known.
