Max Verstappen has secured pole position after a difficult Friday at the Zandvoort circuit. It looked as though the Dutchman would have to reckon with Ferrari and Mercedes, but in the end he outpaced rival Charles Leclerc in qualifying.
Verstappen will have to be on the defensive on Sunday, as Leclerc and Carlos Sainz will start from P2 and P3. However, overtaking is difficult on the Dutch circuit, so Ferrari will need to focus on a strong strategy. Lewis Hamilton does good business for Mercedes with fourth position, while teammate George Russell starts from sixth.
Perez ends up in the wall
Sergio Perez had hoped for more, but the Mexican crashed into the wall in the closing stages of Q3 and was unable to complete his lap. This also penalised a number of drivers behind Perez, who had to end their lap early due to yellow flags. Mick Schumacher impressed with a P8, while Lance Stroll also did good business for his team. However, the Canadian was out of action in Q3 due to technical issues.
Daniel Ricciardo and Sebastian Vettel will be disappointed after qualifying for the Dutch Grand Prix. Lando Norris did manage Q3, while Ricciardo only finished 17th. Vettel looked fast in Q1 with a purple first sector, but after a mistake the German had to abandon his lap.
