Russell on P2: "It wasn't the result we hoped for"
George Russell finished second in the 2022 Dutch Grand Prix at Circuit Zandvoort. The British driver had an interesting race, though the debrief inside the Mercedes garage might be even more interesting.
Right call on the tyres
Russell opted to make a pitstop under the safety car for the soft tyres, whereas his teammate Lewis Hamilton used the medium tyres in the lead. It turned out that Russell made the correct decision for himself and soon followed Max Verstappen by overtaking Hamilton after the safety car. With Hamilton very unhappy on the radio, it will be an interesting debrief for Mercedes but for now, Russell wants to enjoy the podium finish.
"Firstly, thanks to the crowd. We like to keep it close," Russell said about his overtake on Hamilton down the home straight when it looked for a second like they might collide for the first time as Mercedes teammates.
"As a team today we showed incredible pace, it wasn't the team result we had hoped for but it will give us lots of confidence going forward. It's incredible to see three different teams on the podium, and we are getting closer to the top step."
