Ocon wants to become Alpine leader: 'Busy working on 2023 car'

Esteban Ocon believes he can become Alpine's new leader. Two years ago he seemed written off, but he is still "alive" as he himself states in conversation with the Italian branch of Motorsport.com.
Ocon survives in F1
In 2020, Ocon returned to Formula 1 at Alpine and had a tough year. Daniel Ricciardo dominated him and although it was Ricciardo's last season with the team, the prospect was not necessarily better. Indeed, with Fernando Alonso, an acknowledged 'teammate devourer' came to Alpine as a replacement. Ocon was already doomed.
Yet Ocon survived Alonso's arrival. The Frenchman was even given a new contract last year that keeps him with the French racing team until 2024. ''I am still here,'' Ocon joked to the Italian medium. The Frenchman has learnt a lot from Alonso in those little two years, but also hopes Alonso has learnt something from him.
Relationship with teammates at Alpine
An unpleasant partnership with Alonso is not something Ocon has. ''No, we have a good relationship,'' says the single race winner. At the end of 2022, Alonso is already leaving and who Ocon will be his new teammate is still unknown. Pierre Gasly is much mentioned, but he is yet to be loosened up at AlphaTauri. Gasly's arrival could cause irritation though, as the relationship between the two French drivers is anything but good.
Still, Ocon knows the team expects him to become the new leader. Ocon has been with the team the longest and is confident he can take the team in tow. ''Whoever comes in has less experience within the team, while I am already very busy working on the 2023 car,'' the Frenchman concludes.
