Max Verstappen has taken the double on Friday in Montréal, as the Dutchman took FP2 after taking the earlier Friday session as well.

Mercedes were quick to grab the one-two in the opening twenty minutes of the session, with most teams opting to go for supersofts, the hardest compound available in Canada this weekend. Then came Max Verstappen, the leader of FP1, to spoil that party. He was constantly trading blows with the Mercedes cars, with the one car taking the lead after the other.

Racing was shortly suspended for about ten minutes as Carlos Sainz lost the rear-end of his Renault and put his backside into a wall. Somehow there was no structural damage on his RS18, but the track was full of debris from his rear wing, so the red flag was waved to clean the mess up.

After the practice session got back underway, Kimi Raikkonen took charge. He was driving on hyper softs, two compounds softer than Verstappen and Hamilton, and therefore he took first by almost half a second.

Verstappen wanted more and also switched to hyper softs, and he immediately flexed his muscles by taking the lead back. The 20-year-old looked hungry out there and looked like he had a point to prove, which he did.

Another yellow came out, as Stoffel Vandoorne had broken his car this time. The Belgian kissed the wall on the way out of a chicane, puncturing his right rear tyre as well as breaking his suspension. A costly mistake for Vandoorne, who will be looking to beat Fernando Alonso in qualifying for the first time this year on Saturday.

Another wrinkle to FP2 was Daniel Ricciardo. The Aussie had come in third place earlier on Friday but was mostly sidelined during FP2 with technical issues. The laps he did do in the last twenty minutes of the session looked average at first, but he gradually improved and eventually found himself all the way in P3. Another P1 and P3 for Red Bull, the same result as in FP1. Ricciardo's RB14 didn't look ready for prime time at first in FP2, but he managed to turn it around.

The other RB14, the one of Max Verstappen, looks more than ready. A dominant day from the Dutchman, which hopefully means good things for him for tomorrow's qualifying session and Sunday's race. Either way, we'll be there to cover it as it happens.
