Wolff guards against too much optimism: 'That will be a challenge for us'

Mercedes hopes to take its first win of 2022 in Singapore, but Toto Wolff is tempering expectations. According to the Austrian, certain parts of the Marina Bay Street Circuit suit the W13 well, but there are also dangers lurking.
Mercedes is yet to have the year it envisaged in 2022. After eight world championships in a row among constructors, it is fighting for second place with Ferrari in 2022. Red Bull Racing is long out of sight and Ferrari is only within reach because of mistakes by the Italians. Indeed, on pure speed, Mercedes falls short.
Mercedes seeks first win
Throughout the season, George Russell and Lewis Hamilton 's W13 has developed well, though, and so the team is moving forward. ''Since the start of the year, we've been making good progress and it's been a strong recovery from the team. We need to keep the momentum going, keep learning and extract the maximum we can from every opportunity,'' Wolff said in his team's preview.
Mercedes is considered an outsider for the Singapore GP. The team has been strong on circuits with slow corners like Zandvoort and Hungary, but Monaco and Baku also showed that the team actually struggles on street circuits. Singapore will show how competitive Mercedes can be at Marina Bay.
''Some aspects of the circuit should suit our car better than some of the recent circuits - but other aspects, like the bumpy surface, might prove challenging. We'll know for sure when we hit the track on Friday,'' Wolff concluded.
