Perez goes into battle for P2: 'Matter of time before Max becomes champion'

Mathematically, both Charles Leclerc and Sergio Perez still have a chance of becoming world champion in 2022. However, the reality is that it is a matter of time before Max Verstappen captures his second Formula 1 title, according to teammate Perez.
Asked if he will have more freedom to fight for victories once Verstappen secures the title, Perez replied in the negative. "I don't think it changes from my side. I think we have to do our own thing," he said during the press conference ahead of the Singapore Grand Prix.
Perez will battle Leclerc for P2
Hopes of a first world title this year have long been given up by the Mexican, but he still has an axe to grind with Charles Leclerc for second place in the championship. "Certainly I think it's a matter of time before Max becomes a champion. So, from our side, it's important to focus on our side and try to deliver the maximum results we possibly can and finish our season on a high these next six races," Perez said.
Perez is currently third in the championship, just nine points behind Leclerc. The Red Bull driver has George Russell in his wake, who in turn has to concede just seven points to Perez. Carlos Sainz is also creeping closer, so the battle for second place may yet become a nice consolation prize in the absence of a fierce title fight in the closing stages of the F1 season.
