Full results of FP1 in Japan | Alonso fastest in wet Suzuka
- GPblog.com
The first free practice session of the Japan GP is over and on the wet tarmac of Suzuka, Fernando Alonso was the fastest driver. The Ferraris followed closely behind him and Max Verstappen was slightly behind on P6. Here are the full results of FP1 at Suzuka.
Alpine and Ferrari faster than Verstappen
Verstappen was first to set a time on the Intermediates in FP1. A time that seemed more competitive and somewhat more representative of the weekend's other sessions than the times set before it. Indeed, the first half-hour of the session was mainly for the rookies to explore the track and drive dry on the Wet tyre. Verstappen's impressive first stroke, which saw him nearly four seconds faster than the fastest time to that point, was ultimately not fast enough for the fastest time of the session.
Alonso and Sainz provided a Spanish one-two with the fastest two times. Alpine F1 which is very fast on the straights set the fastest time with Alonso. Sainz and Leclerc were a good three-tenths faster. His teammate Esteban Ocon does close in on P4 and the top five is completed by Haas F1 driver Kevin Magnussen. Only then is Verstappen on P6 with a time more than a second slower than Alonso's. Of course, the differences in times have to do with the different wet track conditions.
