Verstappen on record hunt: will he also take this record today?
- GPblog.com
Max Verstappen's season is already historic. The Dutchman already got alongside Sebastian Vettel and Michael Schumacher with the most wins in a season (13). If Verstappen wins in Mexico, he will be alone at the top of this list.
Of course, there is the note to be made that there are more Grands Prix in a season these days than in the past. That does not alter the fact that Verstappen is secretly eager to win this statistic. Should it not succeed in Mexico, he still has chances to do so in Brazil and Abu Dhabi.
Most points
There is another list from which Verstappen can already take first place, namely most points scored in a season. Currently, Lewis Hamilton is the man who captured the most points in a season. He grabbed a total of 413 in 2019. Verstappen currently has 391. If he wins in Mexico, the Dutchman will reach 416 points. Setting the fastest lap to his name could even take the total to 417. With three races to go, there is a good chance Hamilton's record will be broken. But it should be noted that in the past, there were fewer points to win.
Also in the picture comes the biggest lead over the number two in the title race. In the end, Hamilton captured his world title in 2020 with 347 points. That was 124 more than Valtteri Bottas, who became runner-up. Before the start of the Mexican Grand Prix, the lead over the closest pursuer Charles Leclerc is also exactly 124 points. Whether Verstappen also manages to take the lead in this list, is something we won't know until Abu Dhabi.
