Can Verstappen drive away from pole?
George Russell is convinced that pole would have been his, were it not for a costly mistake on his final fast lap. We will never know, because the fact is that Verstappen did manage to put down two flawless laps in Q3, securing himself pole position.
However, Verstappen will have to start the race with two Mercedes drivers in his wake. Both Russell and Lewis Hamilton showed very strong performances, especially since FP3, so presumably everything is going to depend on who knows how to use their tyres best. Meanwhile, Sergio Perez is more motivated than ever to attack at the start, as his big dream is to take a heroic victory in front of his home crowd.
While Ferrari had some good Friday pace, Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz came up considerably short on Saturday. Sainz had to settle for fifth on the grid, while Leclerc will have to start attacking from P7. The Italian racetrack will have to overcome recurring tyre degradation problems to get a good result in the race.
