It had been a while since Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton met on the track, but at the Brazilian Grand Prix, it was touch and go again. The two rivals collided during a fierce battle. The Dutchman was given a five-second time penalty for the incident, but Martin Brundle believes it was a racing incident.

Due to Mercedes' poor 2022 form, we have hardly seen Verstappen and Hamilton together on the track this season. In the last few races, the seven-time world champion has come a little closer to the Dutchman, but a solid fight still did not take place. At Interlagos, however, it finally happened.

Verstappen wanted to overtake Hamilton, but the two drivers gave each other little room. The Red Bull Racing driver received a five-second penalty for the incident, while Hamilton had to continue driving with damage to his W13. Not everyone agreed with the race committee's decision.

'Verstappen has different limits with Hamilton'

In his column for Sky Sports Brundle analyses the incident between the old title rivals. "Being that far alongside Lewis and on the inside, Max was entitled to some racing room. I have no doubt that Max has a different set of limits when in combat with Lewis, and Lewis has similarly decided to fight fire with fire. And so inevitably they hit but continued."

According to race control, Hamilton could have given a little more space to his rival, but Verstappen was ultimately found guilty. The British analyst notes that Verstappen could also have taken more kerb or gone off the gas. "But that's not racing. I thought it was a racing incident. Lewis' car was a bit scruffy but all the fast bits were intact and he set off in spectacular recovery mode."
