All of Hamilton's streaks coming to an end in 2022
- GPblog.com
Lewis Hamilton may have had his worst Formula 1 season yet. The Briton failed to win a single race in 2022 and finished only sixth in the drivers' championship. A number of Hamilton's records are therefore coming to an end after this season.
First F1 season without a win
The 2022 season is the first in Hamilton's career in which he has failed to win at least one Grand Prix. The Briton made his F1 debut with McLaren in 2007, in which he immediately managed to win four races. In the 14 seasons that followed, Hamilton always managed to win at least one race. This year, teammate George Russell did win, namely at the Brazilian Grand Prix. Hamilton unfortunately did not manage this, bringing his record to an end. The Briton is now tied with Michael Schumacher. The two drivers have both managed to win a race for 15 consecutive years in every season they have competed in.
First F1 season without pole position
Besides a season without a win, Hamilton also failed to register a pole position for the first time in his career. The seven-time world champion has a total of 103 pole positions to his name across all his F1 seasons, but after 15 years in F1, that streak is also coming to an end. Once again, teammate Russell did manage to take pole position in 2022 for the Hungarian Grand Prix.
First F1 season outside the top five in the championship
Before the 2022 season, Hamilton's worst performance in the drivers' championship was fifth position. That happened in 2009 and 2011. Between 2014 and 2021, the Briton always finished first or second in the championship, but a place outside the top five never happened before. That also comes to an end this season, as Hamilton finished P6 among drivers. The Briton was still beaten by Carlos Sainz in the last race of the season. Hamilton himself dropped out due to problems with his car. The Mercedes driver ended up six points short.
Schumacher and Hamilton
The fourth streak is not directly Hamilton's record, but it is a bizarre statistic. Indeed, this year is the first season since 1991 without a race victory by either Hamilton or F1 legend Schumacher. The statistic just goes to show how dominant the two world champions have been in Formula 1. Schumacher last won an F1 race in 2006. After that, Hamilton took over from the seven-time world champion. Who knows, maybe we are now entering the Max Verstappen era.
Russell and Hamilton
Last, Hamilton was beaten for the first time in his career by a teammate who is not a world champion. In 2011, Hamilton was first beaten by a teammate, namely 2009 world champion Jenson Button. After that, the Briton was only beaten in the 2016 season, when Mercedes had a heated title battle between Hamilton and Nico Rosberg. It is also the first time Hamilton has been beaten in his first season with a new teammate. The Briton managed to beat teammates Fernando Alonso, Heikki Kovalainen and Valtteri Bottas in each season.
