George Russell is trying to focus on the positives after a mediocre season for Mercedes. In his first year with the top team, the Briton has managed to deliver stronger results than seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, who struggled a little more with the new Mercedes car at the start of the season.

In his debut year with Mercedes, Russell has had a successful season. Although the W13 could not compete with Red Bull Racing and Ferrari for the title, the Brit has managed to take pole position, sprint race victory and a Grand Prix victory to his name. He finished on the podium a total of seven times. In addition, Russell also managed to beat his experienced teammate Hamilton.

Speaking to F1.com Russell answers the question of how tough his first season at Mercedes has been. After three years at the back of the grid at Williams, Russell remains positive about the lacklustre season at Mercedes. "This season has still been the best season of my career. [We’ve had a lot of] podiums and I think we’ve had a lot of very good races."

Still positives

"I think you’ve got to take the positives from… I’m not going to call this a difficult situation, but from a performance side we’re not where we want to be. But you can’t just sit there, sulk and be upset with everything", the Mercedes driver says. Russell finished fourth in the drivers' championship with a 35-point lead over Hamilton.
