Red Bull: Renault and Honda power "very similar"

Red Bull believe the power output of the Renault and Honda power units are "very similar". The team announced last month that they would be switching to Renault power after four world championships between 2010 and 2013 followed by a bitter falling out with Renault during the hybrid era.

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner told Racefans during the British Grand Prix weekend that he felt the parternship between his team and Honda would lead to greater progress than staying with Renault.

“I think that you can see the situation between the engines is very similar at the moment. It’s all about the potential development.

“This weekend’s been a very tough weekend for Renault. It just very clearly defines where the level is at. You can’t hide behind the statistics of what we’ve seen this weekend.

“So there is a gap to fill and hopefully in Honda… we have a lot of belief in what they have coming in the pipeline.”

A constant criticism of Renault during the hybrid era has been a lack of power, something that became very apparent during the British Grand Prix.

“We were just hugely exposed today in both defence and attack,” Horner told media after the race.

“You could see at the restart with Kimi (Raikkonen) it was a bit like Mexico 2015 even, the amount of additional power (they had). At the second restart he had a moment at Stowe yet was still all over Max into turns two and three."
