Alongside Japan 2012 and Germany 2014, Monaco 2018 cannot be missing from the top three best races of Daniel Ricciardo's F1 career. The Australian calls his victory in the principality one of his strongest races.

Retake for Ricciardo

What added to the strong performance and victory of the then Red Bull Racing driver was the fact that with this win, Ricciardo redeemed himself from Monegasque demons of the past. In 2016, he was already on course to win the race, but a gross mistake by the team in the pit lane caused the Red Bull driver to enter the track behind Lewis Hamilton and, in Monaco where track position is crucial, he failed to win the race again.

Speaking to Speedcafe.com Ricciardo said that the 2018 race should not be missing from his list: "I definitely have to put Monaco 2018 in there. I was fastest every session, the race, whatever." With the anger of 2016 towards his team still somewhere inside him, Ricciardo also went to Monaco two years later. He started the weekend well and it was soon clear to him that he had a second chance this year.

Ricciardo retaliates

The starting phase of the race was a battle with Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel. Ten laps after his first pit stop on lap 17, things only seemed to go wrong again for Ricciardo. The Australian informed his team that he was losing power. "Will this get any better?" he asked the team. The answer was negative. Vettel rejoined behind Ricciardo, who managed to keep the German behind him and yet regained his engine power in the final stages of the race.

Ricciardo called the race his best performance in F1. The way he took this hard-earned win and the revenge after the 2016 blamage gave the ride extra sparkle. The footage of Ricciardo taking a dip in the famous swimming pool after his win is iconic of his F1 career.
