Antonio Giovinazzi will drive for Ferrari in the 2023 World Endurance Championship(WEC) hypercar competition. Ferrari announced on Twitter announced that Giovinazzi is one of six drivers who will participate in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, among others.
In 2023, Ferrari will enter hypercar competition for the first time. The competition was added to the World Endurance Championship in 2021 after a rule change. With six drivers divided between two cars, Ferrari will be on the track in 2023, competing in the WEC for the first time in more than 50 years.
Career change for Giovinazzi
That Giovinazzi is switching to another racing class is not entirely surprising. His period in Formula 1 ended in 2021 after Alfa Romeo decided not to renew his contract. The Italian then ventured into Formula E but failed to score any points there. However, he was a long-time candidate to take over Mick Schumacher's seat at Haas, but in the end the team opted for Nico Hülkenberg. In 2023, Giovinazzi will still stay on as a reserve driver at Ferrari but his main responsibility will be in the WEC. Besides Giovinazzi, Antonio Fuoco, Nicklas Nielsen, Alessandro Pier Guidi, James Calado and Miguel Molina will also race for Ferrari in the hypercar competition.
The competition kicks off on 17 March with the thousand miles of Sebring. Formula 1 fans will see some more familiar faces in the hypercar competition besides Giovinazzi. Kamui Kobayashi, Brendon Hartley and Paul di Resta, among others, will also take part in the racing class in 2023.
