Horner sees potential with Ricciardo: 'Great asset for Red Bull'

Daniel Ricciardo may not join Red Bull Racing as a regular driver, but he could also prove to be of great value to the team in the role of third driver. At least that is the belief of Christian Horner, who sees the returning driver as a great asset.
Horner sees 'great asset' in Ricciardo
"I think it's a great asset for us to have Daniel back in the team with all those races of experience, the victories that he had with us," Horner interjects in conversation with Viaplay. "He grew up with Red Bull, it's great to have him back home and he's gonna play a key role behind the scenes, in the sim, testing, and obviously tyre programmes and a big marketing activation programme."
The 33-year-old Australian will be present at some races as a reserve driver, but will also do important work in the simulator and during test days, such as Pirelli's tyre tests. With his vast experience, Ricciardo can provide the team with valuable feedback. Commercial activities also form a large part of his duties.
A role as a regular driver is not in the cards for the time being, as Sergio Perez is contracted to the team for the next two years. By staying closely involved in F1, Ricciardo does hope to eventually secure another permanent seat somewhere. "I think he needs to rediscover his love for Formula 1 and I think this is the perfect way for him to do that," Horner said.
