The 2023 season is about to begin, but the Formula 1 world is already looking ahead. At the end of next season, Charles Leclerc's contract at Ferrari expires. The latter is in no hurry to reach a new commitment.

Speaking to Sky Sports, the Monegasque elaborates on his contract situation. “No, there are no talks ongoing now, at least," Leclerc says. “I love the red colour. I love Ferrari. I am happy here. But we’ll see what the future holds. It is very early to speak about this. My contract ends [at the end of 2024].”

Not a priority

Carlos Sainz's contract also expires at that time. Earlier this year, new team boss Fred Vasseur indicated that talks with Sainz had not been initiated either. According to the Frenchman, it is currently - as in the case of Leclerc - not a priority. Vasseur and his Ferrari team's focus is first and foremost on next season when the Italian team wants to make another challenge at the world title.

Leclerc and possibly Sainz themselves need not be in a hurry. Leclerc is Ferrari's front-runner - although the team does not say that out loud - and he realises that Ferrari will undoubtedly do everything it can to keep him on board. Moreover, with Lewis Hamilton's contract extension at Mercedes imminent, there does not seem to be a spot vacant at any other top team. After all, Hamilton wants to continue for years to come. Moreover, it is unlikely that Mercedes will not also tie George Russell for longer. Red Bull Racing has Max Verstappen and having him in a team with Leclerc seems unlikely.
