Jeremy Clarkson does not like how racing looks in Formula 1 these days. He thinks it is a shame that the drivers do not race at full speed for the entire race. According to him, racing is about going through every corner as fast as man and machine can go. Clarkson pointed out that that did not happen at the Saudi Arabia Grand Prix.

Clarkson on Russell

After the safety car, Lewis Hamilton found himself behind George Russell, but on faster tyres. George Russell indicated over the board radio to hold this position of both Mercedes drivers to manage the tyres, as their predecessor, Fernando Alonso, had a time penalty. However, his race engineer indicated that Alonso had already executed this penalty and that the Mercedes drivers could just fight for position. Following that message from his engineer, Russell suddenly stepped up the pace.

"When Lewis Hamilton came up behind his team-mate, George Russell, in last weekend’s Saudi Grand Prix, George solved the problem by driving more quickly. Why didn’t he do that in the first place?" said Clarkson in his column at The Sun.

Clarkson unapologetic about Red Bull

Clarkson also commented on how Red Bull Racing handled the situation around the end of the race. Both Red Bull drivers were asked to drive a set lap time. By which they wanted to ensure that the fight for the lead was over for good. Clarkson does not understand the scaling back of the pace and makes the comparison with other sports.

"And then you had the Red Bulls. To stop them from doing any racing, each of the drivers was told to do the same speed as one another. I know there are boring reasons for this, tyre wear and saving the engine and so on, but I wonder how many people would watch athletics if they thought half the competitors were not going as fast as they could. To prolong the life of their shoes. I want to see a race."
