Red Bull Racing has joined forces with US car manufacturer Ford. From 2026, when Formula 1 will run with new engines, the Austrian racing stable's engines will be co-built by the iconic car brand. Speaking to Auto, Motor, und Sport, team boss Christian Horner spoke about the deal.
The team from Milton Keynes have started a whole new engine branch: Red Bull Powertrains. Ford is to become a part of it Horner explained: "We have built our engine division like a start-up. We bought the materials, brought in engineers and taught them the 'Red Bull philosophy'." The Americans are to play a role in the development of the hybrid engine components, such as the battery, electric motor and software.
The new partnership is only possible because of the FIA's policy. "I fought very hard for there to be a development freeze until 2026. We would not have had the time to set this up otherwise," the Brit said. Until then, Honda will still supply Red Bull with engines. The price cap was also important in making the project possible.
'Horner lashes out at Porsche'
The Austrians were also in talks with Porsche for a possible partnership, but the Germans then wanted shares in the company, something Red Bull would not agree to. "In Ford we now have a partner with the right attitude. They don't rip your hand off when you stick out a little finger," Horner added.
