F2 summary: Bearman wins in Baku, first podium Fittipaldi
- GPblog.com
Oliver Bearman won the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku in Formula 2. It was all very close. Enzo Fittipaldi finished just 2.3 seconds behind the race winner and finished second. Theo Pourchaire was just unable to overtake Fittipaldi. Alfa Romeo Racing junior Frasnsman finished third just behind Fittipaldi.
The 27 laps in Baku were the battleground of an exciting F2 race. Bearman, who started from pole position, retained the lead at the start, as Fittipaldi could not complete his late attack in turn one. On lap two, it was Pourchaire who passed Frederik Vesti, who started ahead of him. The Frenchman left no stone unturned. He used DRS to pass Fittipaldi on the outside at turn three. He found himself in second place behind Bearman.
On lap three, Pourchaire got into the lead himself. The driver dives (obviously in turn one) on the inside of Bearman and moves into first place. A lap later, the fun is already over, as Bearman overtakes the Frenchman again.
Pourchaire has to settle for P3, points for Verschoor
On lap nine, a virtual safety car occurred after Brad Benavides crashed in turn four. On lap 11, the race continued. Bearman created a gap towards Pourchaire, who in turn only had to worry about the oncoming Fittipaldi. The Brazilian passed and despite the Frenchman's insistence in the closing stages, it remained a P3 for Pourchaire. Bearman was long gone and easily seized victory.
Victor Martins finished fourth. Behind the Alpine junior, it was Vesti, Kush Maini, Dennis Hauger, Isack Hadjar, Richard Verschoor and Jak Crawford who still finished in the points.
