Nyck de Vries was briefly in the middle of chaos on the night of Tuesday to Wednesday. The Formula 1 driver was on his way to Faenza, got stuck and then ended up in a fully booked hotel. However, a McLaren employee came to his rescue and the next day De Vries drove back home via the not most accessible route.

At 11.30pm on Tuesday evening, De Vries was on his way to Faenza for a marketing event for the following day. It was already raining quite heavily. "It’s raining intense, Faenza is already flooded and I am unable to get to my hotel," the 28-year-old driver told via Instagram. According to him, by now returning to the highway was not an option either and so he got stuck in the middle of a village.

In a fully booked hotel, that is. "Fortunately McLaren got stranded there earlier and their front jack Frazer was kind enough to give me his room", he said. "The following morning, the hotel lobby turned into an emergency shelter for people who were forced to escape their homes during the night," De Vries continues.

De Vries grateful for help

After the Formula 1 announcement, the AlphaTauri driver saw only one way to get home: via Florence. "After an adventurous drive through the mountains, thanks to the help from local people and authorities in different villages, I finally got home safely. Thank you to every single person who has been kind enough to help me. It was truly hartwarming to see so many look out for each other. My thoughts are with those who continue to be affected by this tragedy."
