Alonso wants to fight for title: 'I don't get obsessed with it'
- Toby McLuskie
Fernando Alonso was very close to his first race victory since Barcelona 2012. The Spaniard finished behind Max Verstappen, who managed to keep the Aston Martin driver behind with a masterclass. It tasted like more for Alonso, he told the press conference.
During the podium ceremony, the 41-year-old star stood for a brief moment on the top step. Was it a warning to friend Verstappen, or did the two-time world champion want to feel what it's like there again? "Yeah, I touched it a few times already this year. But I would love to receive the trophy from there," Alonso laughed.

Monaco was the routinier's preeminent opportunity to add another Grand Prix victory to his record. Will there be another chance this season? "I don't get obsessed with it, honestly. I will be happy fighting for the championship with all second places or fighting for the championship next year" The former Ferrari driver sees this year as a present. "We didn't expect this, and it's just a build-up into next year. So, hopefully, good things are coming."
