Schumacher on tyre test: 'That's why Mercedes is eight-time world champion'

More than half a year after his last ride in a Formula 1 car, Mick Schumacher has been allowed to clock up miles in the Mercedes W14. The German took part in Pirelli's tyre test at the Barcelona circuit, which hosted the Grand Prix last weekend. Schumacher completed 150 laps on the second and final day of the Pirelli tyre test.
On his employer's website, Schumacher waxed lyrical about his first time in the W14. "It was great! I learned a lot and it was a lot of fun," Mick said enthusiastically. "It was a very productive day; we got through everything we wanted to and ran every test tyre on the plan. It was also good to have that first experience of the tyres without any blankets. Obviously having not driven in a while, I felt it physically, but it was good to be back in the driving seat."
Difference between simulator and real world
Should Lewis Hamilton or George Russell be unable to take part during a Grand Prix for one reason or another, Schumacher is basically the designated replacement. Although the test was all about the tyres, it was also a great opportunity to get to know the car. "There is obviously a difference between the simulator and driving in the real world. There will always be a difference as the technology is not at a point where you can compare it 100%. However, it is the closest experience I've had between a simulator and real life. The simulator has prepared me, and the Team has made a great effort of correlating it. That helped me to know what to expect when driving it. It's clear why this Team is an eight-time World Champion."
It is still unknown when Schumacher will get another chance in the Mercedes. On his team's website, the German says he cannot wait for the next opportunity. Incidentally, Schumacher cannot be used by Mercedes after his two seasons as a Grand Prix driver as part of the rookie Fridays, when each team has to let a talent drive the car twice a season for free practice.
