Domenicali on Madrid GP: 'Enough space for two races in Spain'
Rumours have long been circulating that it would be looked at hosting a Grand Prix in Spain's capital, Madrid. The current contract with the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, the circuit where F1 has held the GP in Spain in recent years, expires after 2026. F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali confirmed the fact that Madrid wants to host a race from 2027.
Domenicali confirms interest
Last summer, rumours surfaced that Madrid would like to host a race for Formula 1. Around the Grand Prix weekend in Barcelona, these rumours resurfaced and Domenicali confirmed the interest to AS.com.
"It is true that Madrid wants to host a GP. It is a fact. It is something super positive for the current situation of F1, but there is also another contract running. We will make the right decision for the good of the sport. Taking into account the bid, the two projects are on the table," said the Formula 1 CEO.
'Two races in Spain possible'
According to Domenicali, it does not mean that the Barcelona Grand Prix will then disappear. According to the Italian, it is possible to hold two races in Spain, something that has already happened in Italy in recent years, for example. "If you ask me, there is room for two Grands Prix in Spain. It is something we will discuss and look at. I don't want to rule it out."
