Monaco GP helmet Leclerc auction raises record amount
A helmet worn by Charles Leclerc during the Monaco Grand Prix has fetched a record sum. Sotheby's reports that the Monegasque's helmet has fetched 263,000 pounds. According to the auction house, never before has so much money been laid down by anyone for a worn F1 helmet.
Proceeds from the auction will go to victims in the Italian region of Emilia-Romagna, which was recently hit hard by severe weather and flooding. The Imola Grand Prix was therefore cancelled. Ferrari announced at the time that it would donate one million euros to the victims. Several drivers and teams also came up with initiatives to raise money. Formula 1, for instance, sold the trophies meant for the top three at the Grand Prix at the Imola circuit. This raised a bit more than a quarter of a million pounds.
Leclerc did not only auction his helmet from the Monaco Grand Prix. His racing overalls, gloves and shoes were also sold. These fetched 52.600 pounds, 36.000 pounds and 17.500 pounds respectively, converted from euros.
