Gasly: 'Fight between Alpine, Mercedes, Ferrari and Aston Martin'
- Toby McLuskie
Pierre Gasly made the switch from AlphaTauri to Alpine last winter. The Frenchman may now compete for the Renault-owned team. There, he is the teammate of Esteban Ocon, who is performing better for now. Gasly discusses developments at the team in a column on Formula1.com.
The French seem to have found some speed. In Spain, Gasly and Ocon both drove in the points and a week earlier in Monaco, the latter finished handsomely on the podium. It gives the former Red Bull driver a mountain of confidence. "Outside of runaway Red Bull, it is a fight between Ferrari, Mercedes, Aston Martin and ourselves," states the one-time race winner.
Although Gasly does place a caveat. "As we’ve seen, there’s a big difference between qualifying and race results across these teams and each race there is some variety. Right now, we are at the back of this pack, but with the ability to throw our name into the ring – as we showed in Monaco and at times in Spain." Alpine has yet to make a leap to fight structurally with these teams for the top positions. The Frenchman has an idea of what is needed for that:"finding consistency will be key."
Gasly at Alpine
For the time being, the Rouen-based man's performance at Alpine lags somewhat behind. Teammate Esteban Ocon, with a tally of 25, has tallied 10 more points over the last seven races. "There have been far too many races where I have the speed but without the end result to show for it," Gasly states. But that is about to change:"I know the ingredients are there, we just have to mix them the right way!"
