Russell hopes Hamilton is staying: 'He'll be here for years to come'
Mercedes have made big steps at the Spanish Grand Prix, finishing in second and third place and clearly ahead of the two Aston Martins and Ferraris. However, at the moment, the possible upgrades for the Silver Arrows are not the only important talk in town, as the team is looking to agree on a new contract with Lewis Hamilton. Here is what George Russell had to say about this question.
George Russell has made it clear to Sky Sports where he stands on his teammate Lewis Hamilton’s contract situation. "Yes (he should sign it). You only have to look at his skin. He looks like a 25 year old. I have a few more wrinkles!” the Briton exclaimed jokingly.
Russell has also assured that Hamilton and him both believe in the Mercedes project. "There is many more years left in Lewis. I guess he is at the stage now where as long as he is enjoying racing and sees a chance to win, why wouldn't he continue? We both believe in this team. He'll be here for years to come for sure."
'No guarantees in Canada'
The Briton also said that Mercedes’ success might not be replicated in Montreal. "Barcelona with the new changes is all medium-high speed. Montreal is all slow speed. Barcelona is smooth, here is very bumpy with hitting the kerbs and it's a street track. In Barcelona we had the three hardest tyres, here we have the three softest. There are no guarantees we will be as competitive as Barcelona."
"At best, I think it will be close with us Aston and Ferrari. But the spirits are good, we are in a good place and things are going in the right direction. No reason why we can't have a good weekend," the one-time race winner continued.
