Fernando Alonso had a lesser weekend in Barcelona, but in Canada he took his revenge. At the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, the Aston Martin driver had to push hard after a poor start, but second place provides much satisfaction for the 41-year-old Spaniard.

Alonso was allowed to start from second, due to the grid penalty of actual number two Nico Hulkenberg. Instead of attacking Max Verstappen, he lost a position at lights out. Alonso had to chase Lewis Hamilton and he did so successfully. He scored 18 important points for the world championship thanks to his second place.

Fighting with Hamilton

"We were hoping to challenge a bit more the Red Bull, but we lost a place at the start with Lewis, and it was a battle with Mercedes. Lewis was pushing the whole race so I didn't have one lap I could relax a little bit. It was a good battle," he looked back on his duels with his former teammate with satisfaction.

Alonso is happy that the race was over after 70 laps. "It was a very demanding race. All 70 laps of qualifying."
