Verstappen has heartwarming message for Jos: 'I miss that sometimes'
Max Verstappen would not have been where he is today without his father. The two-time world champion firmly believes that. From a young age, it was Jos who steered his Max towards Formula 1 and with success. Verstappen Jr. has a heartwarming message for his father, during the press conference after the Canadian Grand Prix.
The Dutchman brought his Red Bull over the line first, on Father's Day no less. "I don't need to buy him a present. I did this, so I think he's happy," Max says with a laugh, talking fondly about the bond with his father. "We've lived through so many things. And after my dad's own career, he invested all his time in mine. It's hard to explain how much he has dedicated to me because I probably still don't even understand how much he did," states the 41-time race winner. "Go-karts, engines, and then driving all the way to Italy... I probably only will fully realise how much he has done to me once I get kids."
Verstappen is sometimes nostalgic
It was his father who assisted Verstappen from his first metres in karting and helped him find his way into the premier class. Twenty years later, his son is what he used to dream of himself: world champion. "Without him, I wouldn't be sitting here. He had this goal set for me to be, first of all, better than him and then try to get to Formula One." Since he has been driving in Formula One, they work less together. After all, Jos has completed his goal. Son Max drives for the fastest team in the highest racing class on earth. "Sometimes you miss these kind of go-karting times when you're traveling together in a van," says Max. Nevertheless, son and father still have a close relationship. "We still call every day. Sharing all those moments together, I think is very special."
